The Literacy Center

Mayra's Story
My name is Mayra. I have been in the literacy program for almost four years. I started going to math classes to get my GED. After I passed the exams and got my certificate, I enrolled myself in a tutoring program to improve my English.

My tutor, Linda, helped me with the communication, writing, and grammar skills needed to communicate with teachers, doctors, and friends I met. I became more proficient in English and gained confidence to reach a new goal.
In August 2024, I decided to start the process to become a citizen of the United States. Linda helped me by giving me context to the exam questions. That way the information stayed in my mind. I not only memorized the questions but also knew the history behind it.

The day before the exam I was nervous, but Linda sent me a message with good wishes saying that I was prepared. That gave me confidence. The next day, I took the ferry to San Francisco and got my citizenship. I’m so happy because I was very well prepared and answered all the questions without hesitation.

Thank you to the Literacy Program at Napa County Library and my tutor, Linda, for giving me the tools to reach my dreams!
